About the work

ஆத்திச்சூடி is a concise Tamil guide to conduct, learning, generosity, self-control and life with others. Its short lines follow the Tamil letter sequence, which makes them easy for young learners to remember. It is traditionally attributed to the later Avvaiyar, and is different from Subramania Bharathiyar’s புதிய ஆத்திச்சூடி.

The English beside each saying gives its plain meaning, not a verse translation. Some sayings reflect the social and religious setting of their time; where a line has an old or disputed sense, the meaning is given carefully.

Meaning: Let us repeatedly praise and worship the deity adorned with the aathi blossoms.

  2. 2ஆறுவது சினம்.Anger will cool; let it subside.
  3. 3இயல்வது கரவேல்.Do not withhold help you are able to give.

  5. 5உடையது விளம்பேல்.Do not boast about what you possess.
  6. 6ஊக்கமது கைவிடேல்.Never give up your resolve.
  7. 7எண் எழுத்து இகழேல்.Do not neglect numbers and letters.
  8. 8ஏற்பது இகழ்ச்சி.Depending on handouts can diminish one's dignity.
